Tuckers Partner Andrew Keogh, writing in the New Law Journal gave a cautious welcome to government proposals to provide victim's with a direct input in the sentencing process.
Whilst any victim engagement with the criminal justice system is a welcome development, it is vital that safeguards are in place to ensure long established sentencing principles are not eroded.
It is hoped that if victims see the sentencing process first hand it will open up the court process and balance the picture presented by the press. Victims will be able to hear mitigation first hand and understand the many varied factors that lead some to a life of crime.
