Press Release

Nilsen to challenge prison service

7 March 2003

The High Court has granted permission for Dennis Nilsen to challenge the Prison Service over its decision to withhold the manuscript of his own autobiography as part of its policy to prevent the publication of the same.

On the 5th March 2003 Mr Justice Maurice Kay granted permission for Judicial Review. There will now be a hearing in the High Court and if successful it will clear the way for the publication of Mr Nilsen's autobiography. The decision is likely to have implications for other prisoners seeking to publish material or to contact the media.

Mr Nilsen who is located in HMP Full Sutton in York is seeking no financial reward for his autobiography for himself or anyone else.

Mr Nilsen is represented by Mr Nick Wells, Solicitor, of Tuckers Solicitors, Manchester Office who can be contacted on 0161 233 4321
